Mississippi Journey Film Wins Awards

MISSISSIPPI JOURNEY FILM WINS GOLD AND BRONZE AWRDS

The National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium's interactive film has won two national awards, including the Gold Camera Award from the International Film and Video Conference and the Bronze Medal in the History and Culture division of the American Association of Museums.

The American Association of Museums award was announced last week at the annual meeting in Indianapolis, attended by over 3,000 museum professionals. Jerry Enzler, Executive Director for the Dubuque County Historical Society’s Museum &Aquarium was elated to hear the news. “There are over 10,000 museums in the country, and to win a Bronze Medal is high praise, especially considering that the judges were only able to see the center panel of the film. If they could have seen the side panels, experience the rumbling seats, the lighting and fog effects and hear the sound track on the Dolby stereo system, I think they would have been blown away.”

It seems that they were blown away, according to judges comments. The museum judges described Mississippi Journey as “first-rate… stunning and innovative, blending the latest in video technology and in multi-sensory "special effects" for a theater setting. We felt as though we were experiencing our own boat trip down the Mississippi…truly an immersive, engaging, fun and informative visitor experience. The story expands where appropriate to the breadth of the river, and flows just as smoothly…a beautiful piece of filmmaking.”

Mississippi Journey, produced by Manadnock Media, is a fifteen-minute high definition immersive theater experience. It employs three screens, a theatrical lighting package, and a host of special effects to create a unique portrait of the timeless grandeur of the Mississippi River.

“What is compelling about the film,” according the Enzler is that “real people tell their own river stories, conveying a deep love of the Mississippi. It is truly a moving experience, physically and emotionally.”

Mississippi Journey is the second Museum & Aquarium film win an honor. In 1997, River of Dreams, narrated by Garrison Keiller, was honored with the Best Film in a History Museum in the Country by the Muse Committee of the American Association of Museums as well as the Gold Camera Award by the US International Video Competition.

Mississippi Journey and River of Dreams are shown on a continuous schedule daily at the William Woodward Discovery Center at the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium and are included with the price of admission.

The National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium, in association of the Smithsonian Institution, is located in the Port of Dubuque, Iowa and is also home to the National Rivers Hall of Fame.
